Thanksgiving Day ushers in one of the busiest travel migrations of the year in the United States with many of those travelers taking to highways and freeways to celebrate this uniquely American holiday.
If you will be heading out on the road this year, here are some important travel safety tips:
- A week or two before your planned departure, schedule an inspection of your vehicle. Beyond making sure your car is mechanically ready for a road trip, you’ll want to have both your tire pressure and the depth of the remaining tread on your tires checked. Do your tires need to be replaced in the next several months? It may be wise to replace them even sooner, particularly if you’re planning on traveling a long distance or if you live in an area that has rainy or snowy winters.
- Before you get started on your trip, it’s also a good idea to have an emergency roadside kit stowed away. These generally include a flashlight, jumper cables, roadside flares, and reflective warning triangles. You may want to include tools for basic repairs. Don’t forget some first-aid supplies. It’s also a good idea to pack a plentiful supply of non-perishable snacks and warm blankets. And, of course, make sure you have water for everyone in the car.
- If you will be traveling with children, make sure their car seats are properly installed. Car seats significantly reduce the risk of injury or death during accidents by ensuring that children are securely restrained. A correctly installed car seat provides essential protection, absorbing impact forces and preventing ejection from the vehicle. It is vital to follow manufacturer guidelines and use the appropriate seat for the child’s age, weight, and height. Also, don’t forget that all children under the age of 13 should ride in the backseat.
- You may be in a hurry to get to your destination but do take the time to stop periodically to stretch and refresh from the stress of driving. This will help prevent fatigue and keep you alert behind the wheel. If you take the time to map out your route before you leave home, you can even identify some fun stops along the way.
- Don’t forget your phone charger! While you want to avoid distractions and keep your focus on the road, your phone can alert you to weather conditions and road conditions in real-time. Do NOT text and drive, but do check in regularly and keep someone updated on your travel plans.
Here’s to safe travel and a Happy Thanksgiving!
